US STATE DEPARTMENT MARKS EUROPEAN UNION'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY

US Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte will tonight host a reception at the State Department to mark the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, which helped create a half-century of peace, prosperity and partnership and led to the establishment of the European Union as a major actor on the world stage.

Since its inception, the process of European integration has been strongly supported by the United States. The EU and US have a long and mutually beneficial history based on shared fundamental beliefs in democratic government, human rights and open economies. The EU and US are essential partners in sharing international responsibilities and facing global challenges.

Deputy Secretary Negroponte and US Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried will be joined by European Union representatives, including European [Energy] Commissioner Andris Piebalgs [at right], German Ambassador Klaus Scharioth representing the EU Presidency and Ambassador John Bruton, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to the US. Guests will include diplomats, business people, political figures, academics, journalists and NGO representatives.
